In 1999, he launched his fourth album, Little Zab 1, in which he interspersed standards with original compositions in the company of Sylvain Provost on guitar, Frédéric Alarie and Guy Boisvert on bass, and Philippe Soirat on drums. This CD also won a Félix for jazz album of the year - this time at the 2000 ADISQ awards. “The moment he starts playing, the sound goes straight to your heart. The blend of Rieu’s sax and Provost’s guitar prove , in just a few notes, that heaven does exist. Beauty, pure and simple; nothing over the top.”Le Soleil, Quebec City. “It’s as if his saxophone is on a never-ending quest for beauty, tenderness, and the heart. Not an easy task because lyricism rarely goes with modesty and reserve.” Jazz Hot, Paris.
The second part of this session, Little Zab 2 (2001), recorded with the same musicians, was nominated in the categories of “jazz album of the year” and “composer of the year” at the 2002 ADISQ awards. “A subtlety and introspection that are not features one often sees in jazz. A performance without catches or dissonances” Quebec Audio, Montreal. “Rieu’s discourse strikes a remarkable balance between finesse and density. A flow and fluidity that recalls Ben Webster. Brilliant.” Voir, Montreal. |
